Ammonites are the fossilized remains of an extinct squid-like animal with an external chambered shell. The ammonite comes from the Mahajanga River Basin in the region of northwest Madagascar It dates from the Early Cretaceous period. The leaf shaped patterns on the ammonite are known as "sutures", from the Latin sutura, meaning "a stich". The mineral composition is usually calcite or limestone, with occasional inclusions of pyrite or jasper.
This specimen is the rare "blonde" color with the last chamber still mostly intact. To us it looks like fall leaves imprinted on it. We love them!
